Home in the Hummock

Marthas Vineyard Modern Role: Project Architect at Turkel Design Designed while at Turkel Design, project architect Samuel Robertson designed a home to sit nestled into the landscape. Beach dunes are everchanging with the winds. The rising and falling of the sandy dunes pinned by black oak and pine, dune grass, beach plum, and bayberry. A hummock is the mound of sand that rises above coastal marshes. This one level home embodies indoor/ outdoor living. The mid-century style home is graceful and low to the ground, an ecologically respectful decision that minimizes light pollution to the beach. A breezeway seperates the main living area from the guest wing, operating as an operably dynamic space can be enclosed or open on both sides. The Spring and Summer breeze helps convect warm air from the wood burning fireplace from the breezeway to the patio for late night gatherings. Accessibility in design is an oppurtunity for us to build a timeless one level home. With regulatory restrictions on building height, our team designed the home to have low to ground access to the elements. Summer is about forgetting your shoes before you walk out of your home and down to the beach. Overall this 2460 square foot home contains 3 bedrooms and three bathrooms, featuring two common areas that allow guest to flow from activity to activity, and enabling moments of privacy and quieter comfort while maintaining a central node for a larger gathering.
